| HUNTING | |||||||||||
![]() In season, hunting is offered for duck, geese, grouse, bear, moose, wolf and fox. Due its remote location, our area (James Bay Frontier) produces some of the best black bear, moose and wolf habitats. The nearby town of Hearst is known worldwide as "THE MOOSE CAPITAL". Let us provide you with an unforgettable opportunity to fulfill your dreams of moose and black bear hunting. MAIN BASE BEAR HUNTING 7- day bear hunts run weekly from August 15 to September 15. (Hunt start and finish times can be arranged to meet your schedule.) Our main base caters to both bow and gun hunters (or camera). Main base American Plan Hunts These include 3 delicious meals per day prepared by our own chef Denyse (meal times can be arranged to meet your schedule.) Main base housekeeping units have electricity, hot and cold running water, showers, and are heated and very comfortable and have everything you will need (including microwave and gas grill). We try to accommodate 12 or less hunters per week. Non-hunters accompanying you are $400 U.S. each/week (no meals), $600 U.S. per week with meals (includes fishing with boat & motor). Taxes and Fishing & Hunting licenses are extra. Bear skinning is an additional $100 U.S. Fishing (and boat and motor) is included with all hunts. You will have freezers available to store your meat and hides.
The majority of our past hunters and fishermen come back to us each year. (Most of our hunters book the next year's hunt while they are still hunting with us. 75% of our hunters hunt with archery. NOTE: Bear hides are much better quality in the fall. (Also there are much fewer biting flies during the fall hunt.) Hunting Licences are extra for all hunts. |
This camp was started in 1949. My wife, Denyse, and I took over this operation in 1987. Due to our careful management, this area has an exceptionally abundant large bear population.
The Ontario record 760 pound black bear was killed in our area in September 1993.
(We have bears even larger, but be warned; big bears are not dumb!) Statistics: Since the closure of the spring bear hunt in Ontario, our bear population has exploded. Within the last 2 years our local bear population has more than doubled. Most baits have 4 or more bears. Most male bears field dressed between 175 - 300 lbs. Female bears dressed between 120 - 200 lbs. Because of our northern latitude, abundant bear population, and limited natural food supply, most of our male bears are lean. Most of our male bears that field dress over 200 lbs. will make "P& Y" 2001: during the first 3 weeks of our hunt only one hunter did not get a good shot at a bear. The last week of our 2001 bear hunt (Sept. 8 - 15), our hunters had to leave early in their hunt due to the horrible events in New York City and Washington. 2002: We had an incredibly abundant berry crop that slowed bait activity, however, the first three weeks of our hunt 75% of our hunters had a shot at a bear. The week of Sept. 8 - 14 was incredibly hot with temperatures in the 90's and most bears stopped moving. The few bears that did hit baits, hit them after dark when the temperature cooled slightly. NOTE: We limit the number of anglers, bear and moose hunters to prevent over-harvesting of our fish and wildlife. ![]() ![]() |

| OUTPOST BEAR HUNTING |
Our 500 square mile Archery only area (Cooper & Mons lake outposts) has incredibly huge bears. Most bears taken from this area make P&Y and some even make Boone & Crocket. This hunting area borders the northern portion of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve ( the largest wilderness no-hunting sanctuary in the world). For archery hunters with ATV's, the accommodations for this archery only area is our solar powered Mons Lake outpost cabin. This cabin can accommodate 6 hunters very comfortably and it has running water and a shower. ![]() |
What to Bring: We recommend that hunters bring quiet portable tree stands (most bears are within 200 yards of each bait and can hear you climb) and personal items such as food, camo clothing, sleeping bag (for outposts), scent neutralizing spray, hunting and fishing equipment, trail timers, bug spray (just in case) and proof of hunting experience (an old hunting license from any state) to obtain an Ontario license. Please let us know what kind of vehicle you are coming up here with and if you plan on bringing an ATV (Law requires you to wear a helmet to ride the ATV) so I can set aside bait sites ideally suited for you and your party. Bait sites take into consideration the terrain & prevailing winds so bears are less likely to smell or see you. Most baits are 2 - 3 miles apart within 45 minutes from each camp. On your first day of the hunt, I will show you where your bait site is located and which tree would be better for you to shoot from. I will also show you how to arrive and leave a bait site without spooking the bears in the area and where to place your positioning bait in order to get the perfect shot. You are required to supply your own transportation to and from baits. NOTE: We place all our hunters at bait sites that I would personally hunt. I will work as hard as possible to ensure every hunter has a shooting opportunity on a trophy bear or moose.

| MOOSE HUNTING | ||||||||||
| Our archery moose hunting area seems to
attract many trophy bulls during the fall "rut". The rut usually starts within the first 10 days of the open archery season. It is quite common to have 2 or more bulls respond to my calls. Most shots are within 20 yards (the closest so far is 2 yards). Due to our extremely high success rate, we have many people on our waiting list. We are accepting only the people that have supported us by bear hunting with us after the spring bear hunt closure. We can provide gun hunts, but only for calf moose. |
