ARTICLES Canyon Lake A Fisherman's Paradise " If I were to recommend a Canadian destination to someone who has never been to Canada or a seasoned veteran looking for something different I would recommend Canyon Lake in the Northwestern Ontario region." Canyon Lake will be one you remember for years to come. Peace and quiet with excellent fishing. Pristine natural setting, rugged and wild just as nature intended. Canyon Lake is home to three of North Americas most popular game fish. Walleye, smallmouth bass, and my favorite critter, muskie. All three species are plentiful in size and numbers. It is not uncommon to catch fifty walleye or more in just a few hours time. Canyon Lake offers anglers in search of muskie a better of putting a fish in the boat than any other lake I have ever fished on either side of the border. Canyon Lake has given up 30" walleye every week I've been up there for the last three years. You can go on catching walleye for hours on end. Blyth's Canyon Lake Lodge offers a wide variety of packages to meet all of your vacation needs. Canyon Lake has all the makings of a dream vacation. A fisherman's paradise. Make plans to visit Canyon Lake this year and experience the very best Ontario has to offer. Read full article in the January issue of Midwest Outdoors Canada Fever Section. Echoes from the Canyon "The three days we spent on the water were by far the best we ever experienced for the number of fish boated". "If you are looking for a truly exceptional fishing destination give Blyth's Canyon Lake Lodge a try". We pulled out the jigging rods to see what Canyon Lake had to offer. We did not have to wait long before the action started. Walleye and smallmouth bass were very willing to accept our offer of minnows and leeches. One thing we noticed right away was that these fish are not bashful they hammer it. We caught and released near 100 walleye. We boated and released over 60 smallmouth with the largest just under 4lbs. Muskie in the 15-20lb. range are common with 35lb. plus fish caught each year. Kay and I spent maybe 6 hours casting and trolling muskie. We saw 12 and had 2 in the net, the largest 40". I'm not a muskie fisherman but I will be before I return there. Beside quality fishing, the area has beautiful scenery along with abundant wildlife. We are fortunate enough to see 5 moose, a lynx, many eagles and of course the loons. We also has a white tail deer swim across the lake right in front of the boat. The wonderful time we enjoyed will echo in our thoughts until we return. The clean comfortable lake view cabins will accommodate groups from 2 to 10 people. Bruce also has boats on portage and drive-to lakes for pike, trout and walleye. Canyon Lake is Muskie Hotbed "Canyon Lake is a special lake you should try to visit". "I first fished the lake in 1885 and have been sharing it with close friends since. THEY HAVE NOT BEEN DISAPPOINTED". "I have fished hundreds of muskie lakes throughout the midwest and Canada and in my book there is no finer muskie lake than Canyon". Canyon Lake is so productive that many muskie lure manufacturers test their new products there. One tackle representative raised 35 muskies in 90 minutes with a new bucktail. Each year fish between 30 and 40 lbs. are caught and released and the lake is known to produce 50lb muskie. "The first time I fished the lake, I was startled when I raised 11 large muskies from one small weed bed. I ended up seeing almost 50 fish that day and boating several. Structure ranging from shallow bays to deep water and sheer cliffs that dot the shorelines. Throw in the islands, channels and plenty of underwater structure, and you have a wonderful muskie habitat throughout the lake. What about Walleyes? There is a series of underwater humps straight from Canyon Lake Lodge where one September night I caught and released 113 walleyes. The largest that night weighted in at about 9 lbs. Canyon is one of those walleye lakes that just beg you to fish everywhere. And almost everywhere you fish you will find walleye. "World Class Smallmouth Bass Fishing" But if you choose to fish for smallies, the action is fast with the trophies topping out at 6 lbs. the action will be all you can ask for. I've always fished Canyon Lake in the fall and found the fishing pressure light. I stayed at Blyth's Canyon Lake Lodge operated by Bruce & Joan Blyth. It's a clean camp, and owners are very helpful. Bruce is a good fisherman who will go out of his way to make sure you find fish. Its a housekeeping only, meaning you must bring your own food. Most of everything else you need is available including trolling motors and locators. ***Full article featured in March 2001 issue of the Post-Crescent - Appleton, Wisconsin.
